Blended Cask Strength 2019 Edition @roeandcowhiske Blended Cask Strength 2019 Edition @roeandcowhiskey

Yes, obviously it is an NDP, given the modern Roe&Co only started distilling in 2019, but that is neither unusual nor an indication of quality. Also, I visited the distillery in 2023 and it was a most pleasant experience with young but good whiskey. So maybe I just got a bit nostalgic when I got this bottle.
_
There is not much info. It was matured in bourbon cask and comes with 59.1% ABV, but everything else needs to be guessed. Given the light colour and its taste I think it is a young whiskey with a very high grain content.
_
Nose: light vanilla, lot of coconut, green apples and lemons

Palate: more coconut and vanilla, perhaps some spice like aniseed, neither smooth nor noticeably burning for the ABV.

Finish: definitely a downer being short and rather metallic
_
It is a very straightforward young, blended whiskey in cask strength, probably matured in heavily reused casks. It does not try hide that, yet the rather one-dimensional flavour profile and the disappointing finish means this Roe&Co is best used in cocktails or long-drinks. Nothing wrong with that, btw.
(And make sure to try some more recent bottlings! They are good.)

The Whisky Bombers and a Bottle Kill @chivasregal The Whisky Bombers and a Bottle Kill @chivasregal

Luftwaffe’s KGr. 100 Wiking was renowned for being Germany’s premier pathfinding bomber unit in WW2. Using mostly incendiaries and small bombs, they illuminated the target for following bomber wings during the campaign against Great Britain in 1940/41.
_
In doing so they hit multiple distilleries and warehouses, most famously Auchentoshan and Bushmills among others.
This was not intentional, as they were not marked targets for KGr. 100, but the burning whisky basically did the job of illuminating the targets.

It was just that both warehouses and distilleries in the cities were build close to strategic targets, such as harbours, important road junctions and energy-producing industry – all of which were on the Luftwaffe’s charts.
_
It is hard to tell if it truly was always KGr. 100 or another bomber wing, especially in case of Belfast.

The pattern however is similar in all attacks: early in the raid, a distillery or warehouse is hit by incendiaries and small bombs, lighting the way for the next waves of bombers using heavier ordnance. And it is always KGr. 100 in that first wave.
The attack on Clydebank and the bombs on Auchentoshan can confidently be attributed to KGr. 100; Yoker, Ardgowan and Greenock probably, too. The losses of Bushmills and Mitchell&Co are perhaps the result of KGr. 100’s work as well.
_
Therefore it is safe to say that KGr. 100 is the military unit responsible for the most damage inflicted on Great Britain’s whisky industry during the war. Obviously, the loss of life during this war was far more tragic than the loss of whisky. Still, it is a fascinating chapter of whisky history, and one that is rarely explored.
_
I wrote three articles on the Luftwaffe’s bombing of distilleries (one of which was plag..., sorry, heavily used by Der Spiegel...), if you are interested to know more.

Anniversary Whiskey @yellowstonebourbon _ Yellows Anniversary Whiskey @yellowstonebourbon
_
Yellowstone celebrates its 10 year anniversary of its limited editions with a 10 year old whiskey, and it is great. Ten years is quite an extensive maturation for bourbon, but there is another twist. For the first time, barrels from Ross&Squibb (Indiana) are used as well. For it is a blend of three bourbons (all 10yo) with different mash bills.
_
Bottled at 105 Proof (57.5% ABV) this is a powerful bourbon but as it spend quite some time in oak, it is also rather mellow, yet less oaky than one might expect.
_
Nose: caramel, orange marmalade, brown sugar, some notable but welcome oak char to counterbalance the sweetness and roasted nuts

Palate: extremely smooth for the ABV but with a spicy oak kick, again caramel and orange sweets, overripe red berries, and the faintest hint of rye spice (or am I imagining that because I know there is MGP involved?)

Finish: more leather, more oak spice, some pepper, dark chocolate
_
This is a very straight-forward bourbon, and executed to perfection. It may not be as complex as the 10 years in oak suggest, yet here and there it shows its superior maturity, especially in the finish. If one is not a bourbon fan, the Yellowstone 10 will not do anything to change that perception. If you are a bourbon fan, it is a must try as it is probably the definition whiskey of a traditional bourbon.
