Marzahn Mill and Millstone American Oak _ @zuidamd Marzahn Mill and Millstone American Oak
_
@zuidamdistillers produces some fine whiskies known for their excellent value. Rye fans for example definitely should try Millstone’s 100 Rye. This time however, we have an entry level single malt. It was matured in American oak which in and of itself does not mean all that much since American oak is used for sherry too. But then the flavour profile clearly shows what kind of oak it is...
_
Nose: toffee and spice, fresh yellow fruit with honey, cereals

Palate: clean and smooth, with a stronger presence of the cereals and spices, including white pepper. Toffee is still there while the fruits are less noticeable.

Finish: short and spicy
_
This is a perfect starter whisky. It is perfectly well balanced with an easily accessible flavour profile but it also has an oaky kick to it.

Revisiting Redbreast, Part I of III _ @redbreastir Revisiting Redbreast, Part I of III
_
@redbreastirishwhiskey (alongside its siblings, the Spot whiskeys) was the last survivor of the Irish Pot Still Whiskeys. As such it is almost synonymous with that style, using malted and unmalted barley in its mash bill. Ever since the resurgence of Irish whiskey in the 2000s/10s, the Redbreast line was expanded by its distillery Midleton.
_
Since Redbreast is one of our first whiskey loves, it is time to revisit the iconic whiskey. We start with the 15yo, bottled at 46% ABV, using the familiar Redbreast maturation in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks.
_
Nose: a massive load of tropical fruit like grilled pineapple, mango, papaya. Also a lot spice like pepper and clove, and even a hint of herbal freshness.

Palate: smooth and mild yet full mouthfeel, again tropical fruit, especially pineapple, but less spicy. Toffee and vanilla, cacao beans.

Finish: medium and oak driven
_
There is a reason, Redbreast survived all the whiskey crashes in Ireland (and will survive the next). It is just a well-balanced whiskey with a very distinct flavour profile. At 15 years of age, it is also rather complex, more complex than most single malts that age. The Redbreast 15 combines a deep, rich character with gentleness.

German Bourbon? No, but... _ Well, first off, the German Bourbon? No, but...
_
Well, first off, the whisky is from Austria, and despite it being a corn whisky, its flavour profile is very much different to bourbon. @destilleriefarthofer prides itself producing everything needed for the whisky themselves, and they products are fully organic.
_
This is a 100% corn whisky fully matured in a red wine cask. So the sweetness of the corn meets with the fruitiness of the wine but also the wood spices and the tannins of the oak. As such, one cannot expect typical bourbon flavours at all.
_
Nose: vanilla, massive dried fruit (apricots, pear, figs), hay, and heavy honey

Palate: oily, again with heavy honey and dried fruit, popcorn, a hint of allspice

Finish: short to medium, mostly sweet
_
This is a very special kind of corn whisky, one that is arguably very European as we like to use our red wine casks on pretty much every whisky. It may be a niche product for those who want to discover new ways of making whisky, but it surely works.

Apex Terroir Series @mh.distillery _ The M&H Dist Apex Terroir Series @mh.distillery
_
The M&H Distillery in Israel produces some fine whiskies, all of which are shaped by the local landscape and climate. So it made sense to emphasize the importance of those factors. This new series features four whiskies from different corners of Israel. All of them exhibit different aroma and taste profiles.
_
🏞️ Jerusalem Mountains, 55.4% ABV:

The influence of the cool forests appears to have created a fruit basket. Juicy and zesty apples, oranges and pears dominate. A little wood spice adds to that plus the slightest hint of fresh forest herbs.
_
♨️ The Dead Sea, 57.4% ABV:

351 meters below sea level, temperatures are insanely high, and so is the angel’s share of 25%. The whisky needs some time to breath but then it shines. With vanilla, salted caramel, tea leaves and a crisp minerality, it is a well-balanced whisky worth attention.
_
🌅 The Sea of Galilee, 56.2% ABV:

Matured in a hot and humid environment, this whisky presents ripe fruit with a bee wax overcoat and a good amount of honey and dates. This sweetness is counterbalanced by some cinnamon bark.
_
🌄 Negev Desert, 54.2% ABV:

My favourite: after being exposed to the hot and dry climate of the desert, the resulting whisky is woody and spicy. Just how I like it. White pepper, red chilis, dark chocolate and roasted almonds may not make for an easy sipper but I love it.
_
We had a great time with these four expressions that demonstrate the diversity of Israel, its country, its climate and its whisky. It also proves young whisky can be impressive. After all, with the kind of angel’s share most of them have, they cannot be old. But they do not need to be. Overall, this tasting set was thus a nice way of exploring Isreal.
