The King and His Rye @elviswhiskey _ Grain & Barr The King and His Rye @elviswhiskey
_
Grain & Barrel Spirits partnered with Elvis Presley Enterprises to bring us this rye. Sourced, then blended and bottled in Tennessee, its mash bill of 95% rye and 5% malted barley is a pretty clear indicator of where it was sourced from. Given that Elvis started his career in Tennessee, Tennessee Whiskey is a good choice, and rye certainly represents Elvis’ youthful vigour.
_
Nose: many green herbs, especially peppermint, a bit dark chocolate and mild spice, also citrus and fresh green apple

Palate: sweeter with more chocolate and caramel, though the peppermint is still going strong and there is an added menthol element to it, plus wet hay, and finally some more spices

Finish: rather short with an emphasis on the spice
_
This is a young rye. But then, young rye can easily work. This one does. It lacks a bit in complexity, true, at the same time it provides enough power and the right set of aromas to convince rye fans.

Today, the @marinehaus.berlin and I host an Irish whiskey tasting, and yes, there will be rye. It is the final whiskey after a number of more traditional expressions including single pot still and single malt styles. This way we can show the creativity and range of Irish whiskey.
_
Now, the designation of this whiskey is difficult. The mash bill is dominated by rye and a malted barley (some of it peated), with a little oat. There is no such thing as rye whiskey in Irish legislation, but also it cannot be legally called grain whiskey for the malted barley content is too high. For single malt, the barley content is too low. And it cannot be a blend because that would be a blend of those two.
Hence, it is just Irish whiskey.
_
Matured in an European oak cask that previously held Ribera del Duero red wine, the taste of this whiskey is very complex. Spicy, yet non-herbal rye notes combine well with classical malt notes and the creaminess brought by oats. Even the small amount of peated malt can be felt in the finish, though it is more of an added layer of depth rather than a defining characteristic by itself. The wine cask then provides more oaky spice and ripe red fruit.
_
This is a highly complex whiskey that shows why the mash bill matters.

Single Barrel Rye for German Single Malt drinkers Single Barrel Rye for German Single Malt drinkers

It is no secret that we love the Rossville Union rye. With almost 180 years of uninterrupted experience in producing rye they know their business. But this bottling is special. It was specifically designed for Germany, and German tastes.
_
Despite being the land of rye bread, Germans much prefer single malt over rye whisky. So this single barrel bottlings comes with the maximum of malted barley in the mash bill that is allowed, 49%. It is just enough rye in there to be legally called rye.
_
The result is an incredibly smooth and fruity rye that still exhibits the raw spiciness and herbal qualities of rye, with a good dose of caramel sweetness from the barrel. Basically, it is as close to Single Malt qualities as a traditional rye can get.
_
But maybe exactly that is a problem... A traditional rye is a very specific breed of whisky. And no matter what, it is still never close to a single malt. Euro ryes with malted rye and more freedom in their cask choices do that much better.
It is still a very good rye even if special, do not get me wrong, I just prefer my US rye with a lower barley content.

This 18-year-old whiskey is the newest addition to the core range Redbreast, available since autumn of 2024. It occupies the space between the 15yo and 21yo expressions as the gulf between them was indeed gigantic. They also tweaked the flavour profile a bit but not much, fortunately so.
_
The basic idea is still to combine the edgy pot still distillate to provide spice and a mix of rather active casks to provide sweetness. Again, the typical choice are bourbon and sherry casks, though in this case they put a stronger emphasis on 1st fill oloroso with the addition of cream sherry and even ruby port. Add to it three more years in wood and you get a noticeably different whisky compared to the 15yo.
_
Nose: that is it... tropical fruit like papaya, grilled pineapple, mango meets creamy chocolate with roasted almonds. However, ripe red fruit and even figs come through as well. In the background mild spice lingers with coriander, cardamon, and a bit of green pepper.

Palate: creamy and silky mouthfeel but still quite intense. Less sweet than the nose would suggest, as the tropical fruit is a little zestier and fresher now. The chocolate however is still there. Also, the wood makes itself known with a somewhat stronger pepper note and some tannins.

Finish: quite long and definitely full of wood spices and tannins
_
As far as flavour profile goes, this is probably the best Redbreast I ever had, excluding the 27yo that is. It shows what a well-aged pot still whiskey can do. And the distillate still exhibits its characteristics even after 18 years in quite powerful casks.
