Happy German Unity Day! _ Today is Germany’s nat Happy German Unity Day!
_
Today is Germany’s national holiday, celebrating the reunification of Germany, the defeat of a socialist dictatorship and the victory of democracy.
_
So what better day than this to pour a German whisky? The recent bottlings of rye whisky by @traditionsbrennerei Nordhausen have been amazing, thus they are a good choice among many...
_
Since we already reviewed them in detail, let us just say cheers!

JD Barrel Strength, a masterpiece _ Everybody kno JD Barrel Strength, a masterpiece
_
Everybody knows JD. What is less well known is the fact that JD also offers some great whiskeys in their single barrel series, and the barrel strength is one of the best. If you think JD is just for the cheap stuff, try this one.
_
Nose: campfire smoked banana, vanilla, custard, clove

Palate: more of the same, but with more oak influence, more spices like pepper and aniseed; the mouthfeel is surprisingly mild yet it is very intense.

Finish: long and strong
_
This is not the most complex whiskey. In fact, it has pretty much all the hallmarks of a typical JD. It just executed so much better. Mouthwatering and smooth, yet incredibly powerful.

@storkclubryewhiskey Full Proof _ This is Stock’ @storkclubryewhiskey Full Proof
_
This is Stock’s flagship and for good reason, widely hailed as one of the best European Rye whiskies. Stork is indeed a distillery that focusses on rye whisky rather than single malt, and their rye is something everyone should try at least once.
_
As the name implies, the Full Proof is bottled at almost cask strength, 55% ABV. The maturation features new American and German oak and sherry as well as white wine casks. That means the Stork has a different character from the more widespread US rye whiskies, though not totally so.
_
Nose: fresh, warm rye bread with salted butter, vanilla and candied almonds, but also cocoa powder. Further in the background lies ripe, fruity sweetness.

Palate: now the bread is dipped in milk-cocoa crème, also rich butter cookies and raisins, hints of oak spice

Finish: quite long with more pepper and clove
_
Unlike many other rye whiskies, the Stork Full Proof is much less herbal and spicy, rather it is sweet and fruity. ...for a rye. And it is still a rye whisky, so one does not need to wait long for its spicy side to emerge.

Penelope Cigar Blend American Whiskey _ There is n Penelope Cigar Blend American Whiskey
_
There is no definition of what actually makes a cigar whisky but many companies mean whiskies that can be enjoyed with a cigar because they are powerful and flavourful enough to come through.
Penelope uses a blend of bourbon, single malt, and light whiskey to make that happen. It is an unusual combination, which given Penelope’s history and strategy does not come as a huge surprise. They like to explore new grounds.
_
Nose: light caramel, warm almonds, blackberries with icing sugar, fresh apples and pear, cinnamon

Palate: mild, sweet and mellow, inoffensive even, more caramel and less fruit, but also more spices like pepper and cardamom

Finish: medium and spicy
_
I could not tell if this is actually a good cigar whisky but it is nice. Funny enough, I would argue this is whisky for single malt drinkers who want some bourbon experience but not all the way so.
