Great Story, Great History @titanicdistillers _ W Great Story, Great History @titanicdistillers _ When bus driver Peter Lavery won the lottery – more than 10 million GBP! – he did what maybe some of us would do as well: he built a new distillery. And a chose a special spot, Belfast’s Thompson Docks, the birthplace of RMS Titanic. It was actually the first distillery build in Belfast since the Prohibition when Irish whiskey was in decline and only recovered in 2010s. _ This whiskey is a sourced blend of malt and grain whiskeys, peated and unpeated. The unpeated malts and the grain are all triple distilled, the peated malt was distilled twice. All this aged in a combination of virgin oak, first fill bourbon, and sherry casks. This mix of many components was not unusual for the old Irish whiskey. Bottled at 40% ABV one may think it is a little weak but we see about that. _ Nose: floral, fresh, zesty green apple, just a hint of peat smoke providing an additional layer of aroma, and faint vanilla Palate: more of the same, but now with added dates and figs, mild wood spices; again, the peat is working in the background, this time however very noticeably so Finish: short but actually quite pleasant _ This is an inoffensive easy sipper, that uses its component mix to great effect in order to elevate itself above the usual 40% easy drinking whiskeys. Especially the peat makes the whiskey stand out because it is not overpowering, just adding depth to an otherwise straight-forward whiskey. _ #titanic #irishwhiskey #peatedwhisky #belfast #thompsondock
Wuyd No.2 Single Cask @oberlandbrennerei _ Hailin Wuyd No.2 Single Cask @oberlandbrennerei _ Hailing from the very south of Bavaria, the Wuyd series is a recent addition to the many German whiskies. The Oberland-distillery is a small family-owned business and produces only small batches with local flair. As such it makes good use of Bavarian malts and a variety of casks in the creation and maturation of the whisky. _ Batch 2 is characterized by a hybrid cask of American and French oak, providing a little extra spice which is to my liking. Matured for three years and bottled at 45% ABV, there are exactly 505 bottles of this whisky. _ Nose: quite malty, lots of coffee, nuts and some nutmeg, also something I would describe as kepab meat in red wine sauce Palate: slight alcoholic burn but creamy mouthfeel, overripe red fruits, even more nuts and dark chocolate Finish: short to medium _ This is a young whisky and quite unmistakenly so. That is not necessarily a bad thing; I for one like them young and wild. Time Travel in a Glass: Yellowstone Recollection S Time Travel in a Glass: Yellowstone Recollection Series (2026) _ This stunningly beautiful bottle pays homage to Yellowstone brand history, back in the late 1800s when it was served in such decanters. Yellowstone’s current master distiller himself, Stephen Beam, is a descendent of the Beam family (obviously) but also of the Dant founded Yellowstone in 1872. So it makes sense for him to honour that legacy. _ Aged for 8 years and bottled at 55% ABV this Yellowstone is both mature and powerful. It is also a sourced whiskey which sparked some debates about its origins though I do not think it is too hard to guess... Another controversy revolves around it being a 700ml bottle as opposed to the traditional US standard of 750ml. But ever since Jack Daniel’s did others follow suit. It probably makes logistics easier, as 700ml is the world wide standard. _ Nose: typical caramel and vanilla notes, sweet corn, plus ripe blue berries and a hint of cherry, solid spices like nutmeg and pepper; very balanced overall, also very traditional Palate: more of the same, perhaps with stronger oak influences as evidenced by more intense spice but also greater caramel impact, a bit of zesty orange peel is added too Finish: short to medium, again balanced finely though _ Yellowstone is well-known for experimenting with finishes, but this expression delivers an about as classic experience as a bourbon experience can be. It also feels rather old-school but that is probably intentional anyway. And, tbh, I still marvel at that bottle. So lovely... _ #yellowstone #decanter #beam #dant #recollections
@eschenbrenner_whisky – Whisky from Berlin _ Esc @eschenbrenner_whisky – Whisky from Berlin _ Eschenbrenner is the only whisky distillery in Berlin, a branch of the famous Eschenbräu Berlin beer brewery. It is a bit surprising that there is only one Berlin whisky, considering the city is home to several rather prolific distilleries, but here we are. _ What makes Eschenbrenner stand out is the fact that all whiskies are carefully aged, so do not get a young whisky in a hyper-active aka wet cask which characterizes many German whiskies (and, to be fair, can be pretty good at times). There is a lot of variety and experimenting with all kinds of casks and malts: peated/unpeated/mixed, new oak, bourbon, rum, you name it. And despite all that experimenting, which at times almost appears eclectic, the maturation is always slow and meticulous; no whisky is younger than seven years. _ This one is our favourite of the current line-up, the Bill. It is nine years old, and has spend seven years in new Spessart oak and ex-rum American oak, before receiving a finish in a Jamaica rum cask. It comes at 47,5% ABV. Though one would think rum notes to dominate the experience, it offers a lot more than that... _ Nose: there are indeed some ripe tropical fruits like mango and banana, plus white gummy bears (artificial pineapple), but there is a heavy vanilla layer spiked with clove and cocoa beans which prevent it from being too sweet, plus the slightest amount of earthiness, finally a bit of wet hay Palate: the tropical fruits remain but seem less sweet now, the earthiness and spiciness of the whisky is increased, more cocoa and coffee, especially oak spices and even tannins get through providing a more balanced whisky, some new elements like brandy beans and a hint of Earl Grey are present as well Finish: medium, oaky but not bitter _ This is good whisky. It has an interesting flavour profile, displays depth and nuances, and it has enough power to underscore that depth. And Eschenbrenner has many more whiskies in its casks, waiting patiently for their release.
