At the wonderful Spreeside whisky festival by @holzmarkt_25, one of our most favourite distilleries offered an exclusive bottling:
Glina presented a 12 year old single malt, matured in Bordeaux red wine casks, sweet cherry wine casks, and sweet berry wine casks, cask strength of course.
_
It is not hard to guess that the resulting whisky is extremely sweet and loaded with intense flavours. The casks were super active and heavily impart on the spirit, especially after twelve years. It is not an easy sipping whisky but surprisingly complex, yet to grasp that complexity one needs a lot of patience.
_
This heavy whisky style is typical for Glina, and one of the reasons we love them so much.
...even if we like their rye better.

Obviously a whisky from Brandenburg deserves to be photographed in front of Brandenburg Gate.

A while ago we presented the Redneck Reviera by American singer @johnrichofficial. The whiskey is a blend aimed for smooth taste, and it is indeed quite relaxed. This Granny Rich Reserve is the more premium variant with older whiskey in the blend, i.e. 3 yo corn whisky and 4 yo single malt, plus a slightly higher ABV.

It works. It just works. It is super sweet and super smooth, like having liquid Werther’s Original candy in your month. While lacking complexity it makes up for it in tastiness and great mouthfeel. The Reserve is a great dessert whiskey.

In Germany it is almost impossible to get, but @moonshine.and.more has a few bottles of them available.

Holzmarkt 25 is not only known for being area open to clubs, night life, arts and culture, but also hosts a small but fine whisky fair since 2018, the Spreeside. After a not-so-voluntary break in 2020 and 2021, the Spreeside reopened in 2022 and it did so with a surprise: an exclusive bottling of German whisky. Fortunately, they continued this tradition, so the 2023 Spreeside again featured an exclusive bottling.

This time, Baltach from Wismar was featured. The distillery is located at the coast of the Baltic Sea and belongs to the Brauhaus am Lohberg, which has a history dating back to 1452. In fact, the name of the distillery is that of its founder: Hinricus Noyte.

To be honest, we never had a Baltach whisky because the ABV is quite low, and the concept did not convince us all that much. It was just the typical young malt finished in sherry casks. But, the Spreeside guys know what they are doing so we gave it a chance. And good thing we did!
_
Coming at 50% ABV it is just the strength we like, and the finish is more intense. We tried it, and we were convinced. It is a good whisky.
_
In fact, it might be the last hurray of the old Baltach whiskies. With some changes in management and distilling team, Baltach will probably quite different in the future. Perhaps a stronger focus on cask strength and more local ingredients is the way to go.
_
Be it as it may, we are happy about the exclusive bottling, and the Roman numerals. Will be interesting so see how that goes on once they reach the 20 or even 30 mark. But right now, it looks great. It tastes great, and it was not overly expensive. What more can you want?

Some time ago, Holly @whisky_buzz travelled to South Africa and brought some Three Ships whisky bottles with her back to Germany. And we had a tasting (which you can still watch online on her YT-Channel). None of us knew much about South African whisky much less about Three Ships. Still, it was an interesting experience.

I liked this 5yo blend quite a bit; delicate, floral with sweet fruit notes, no doubt this blend included a not to small about of grain... and something more. I could not put my finger on it, and most people in the tasting did not get it at all. But then I read about this particular whisky, and it all made sense: it is peat.
_
The malt of this blend is at least partially peated, in homage to Islay whiskies. Well, it is nowhere near that. Even I would not have guessed peated whisky here. But there is an unmistakable effect of it, in the nose as well as on the palate. It adds another layer of depth to an otherwise solid if forgettable easy sipper.
_
As such the 5yo is a welcome surprise experience. Thanks to Holly for bringing this to my attention.
