Some time ago, Holly @whisky_buzz travelled to South Africa and brought some Three Ships whisky bottles with her back to Germany. And we had a tasting (which you can still watch online on her YT-Channel). None of us knew much about South African whisky much less about Three Ships. Still, it was an interesting experience.
_
I liked this 5yo blend quite a bit; delicate, floral with sweet fruit notes, no doubt this blend included a not to small about of grain... and something more. I could not put my finger on it, and most people in the tasting did not get it at all. But then I read about this particular whisky, and it all made sense: it is peat.
_
The malt of this blend is at least partially peated, in homage to Islay whiskies. Well, it is nowhere near that. Even I would not have guessed peated whisky here. But there is an unmistakable effect of it, in the nose as well as on the palate. It adds another layer of depth to an otherwise solid if forgettable easy sipper.
_
As such the 5yo is a welcome surprise experience. Thanks to Holly for bringing this to my attention.

Our Ireland trip was phenomenal, and Ballykeefe surprised us all. The small, family-owned distillery is a classic farm to bottle operation, reviving the Irish tradition of farm distilleries. Using their own grains guarantees the best possible ingredients; also, it is just charming.
_
Morgan Ging, owner and master distiller of Ballykeefe, is furthermore very passionate about eco-friendly production methods; not a single bit is wasted here, even by-products are used to feed the farm animals.
Best of all, the whiskey is not only well-crafted, it tastes just as great.
_
At present Ballykeefe offers a single malt and a pot still whiskey, but there is more coming soon. We were fortunate enough to taste some future whiskies, too, including a remarkable rye and an extra-ordinary oat.
Yes, you read that right: oat whiskey.
_
So there is good reason to keep an eye on Ballykeefe.

One of the bigger surprises during our tour of Ireland’s Ancient East was the Roe&Co distillery in Dublin. Known for a good if unspectacular blend we did not expect much, but there is more than meets the eye.
_
We began with a wonderful deconstruction tasting, and then we were introduced to a whiskey matured in a Guinness cask. Roe&Co is not only geographically close to Guinness, which is right across the street actually, but also cooperates with them.
_
Even better there was a distillery exclusive handfill available, matured in a special Antwerp Stout Cask by Guinness and, of course, in cask strength. That one is a beauty.
_

One of the most fascinating experiences we had, among many fascinating experiences, was visiting Powerscourt Estate. It holds a beautiful garden that gave as peace of mind and relaxation before we went on to Powerscourt Distillery.
_
Distilling since 2019, the Powerscourt Distillery partially relies on sourced whiskey but also bottles its first blend since last year. And it is good. We cannot wait for older single malt, because the quality of this distillery is apparent.
Also, we got a great tasting with food pairing that highlighted locally sourced food, just as Powerscourt itself is rooted locally. Add to it a splendid tour of the distillery led by Gerry @gerryginty, a tasting room in sight of the still and a great company, and you can see why we liked that trip so much.
_
Highly recommended.
PS: try the new make! Such a marvellous spirit!
