While we do not drink peated whisky all that often, we appreciate beautifully designed bottles and this one certainly qualifies.

Part of its core range, Wemyss’ Peat Chimney is meant to represented peated whisky in general and that of Islay in particular, hence it is a blended malt.

The Winchester Rye by TerrePure Spirits is a bit of a weird whiskey. It did spend some time in oak but its aging was artificially accelerated by ultrasonic energy and oxygenation.
_
To be honest, although we are somewhat sceptic, this rye is not bad. The youth is undeniable with its extremely fresh herbal quality that is reminiscent of gin at times. But it also has overlaying notes of cotton candy and burned sugar in the nose, almost like perfume. On the palate it is extra spicy with lots of clove, red pepper and cinnamon, but still an almost weird cotton candy. While not terribly smooth, it soft enough.

It is well possible that this perfume-like sweet overtone may be the result of the aging process. The whiskey is not bad at all, to be honest, if anything, that goes to show how even young rye can be good. We would be very interested in tasting this distillate after a natural aging process.

A good whisky needs a beautiful bottle, too. In fact, the whisky is rather difficult to access, since it needs a lot of time to breath, but once it opens up it is beautifully complex.
_
The combination of rye, virgin chinkapin oak, and red wine casks not only is much to our taste, it makes sense. Fortunately, the peat is only lightly employed. It is still somewhat aggressive, bordering on the alcoholic side but we are sure this will not be the case for long. We will keep an eye on Raasay.

Well, that is basically it: a stunning Littlemill, independently bottled by Cadenhead’s, no less than 31 years old and matured in a sherry cask.

We were able to taste it on the Spreeside whisky fair this weekend, and it was great fun. Next in line was a 26yo Ardbeg...
