We have a rarity today, the Akashi Special Release for Chagata Park Single Cask No 62025. Single Cask and cask strength of 62% ABV is just how we like it.

Matured in bourbon casks, its specialty is the finish in fresh Limousin oak which brings a lot of woody flavours, spicy and even bitter, less of the sweet vanilla. The malt was supposedly peated though rather lightly as it seems.

Nose: honey, ripe plum, mango, and a strong amount of cinnamon bark and saffron, plus light earthy aroma.

Palate: powerful entry dominated by sweet plum and apricot jelly but immediately complemented by a massive amount of oak. Red pepper, chilis, cinnamon, nutmeg... it is very hot, yet not alcoholic despite its ABV. Again, there is a certain earthy quality to it.

Finish: the finish is insanely long and entirely astringent.

This is not an easy sipper but curiously it still maintains a remarkable balance as typical for Japanese whisky. The initial sweet aromas are countered by oaky spice though the latter can seem a bit overwhelming at first.
And the long-lasting astringency of the finish makes you forget about the sweetness of the whisky – until you sip again. Even the peat is well integrated, albeit difficult to notice.

The Artist Blend @compassboxwhiskyco is tribute to Edinburgh and all her artists; as such the bottle depicts Edinburgh’s National Gallery. So we decided to showcase the Artist Blend in its natural environment: the National Gallery of Berlin.

The whisky is a blend of 45% grain from Cameronbridge and malts from various distilleries including Linkwood, Clynelish and Balmenach. The aim was to produce an easy sipper that would appeal to both single malt drinkers and people enjoying whisky cocktails. They definitely achieved that goal.

It is a straightforward whisky, too. There is a nice balance of sweet vanilla, yeast dough and a variety of ripe fruit, most prominently ripe apples, plus a hint of oak in the finish. Overall it comes across as very light and floral but not lacking in flavour. Thus the Artist Blend is dangerously easy to enjoy.

Today, 34 years ago, Germany was whole again. After decades of oppression and socialism at the hands of the SED brave people rose up for democracy and truth. They were called fascists by the East German media, but they persisted against police violence and journalist lies. On October 3 it was all over, Germany reunited under the Federal Republic.

Today, we remember all the great people who made this victory of good over evil possible: peaceful protestors who never gave up their struggle, border guards who followed their conscience rather than party order, politicians who were willing to take the risk and try reunification, no matter the price to pay.
_
Today, we toast to all of them. So here is a whisky from Bavaria and a watch from Saxony, united as they should be. Obviously we will talk about that whisky and that independent bottler later on. But for now we just raise our glass.

Virginia is arguably the birthplace of bourbon, and was once home to many distilleries but prohibition ruined them all. Nowadays new distilleries restart that tradition, and curiously quite a number of them are available in Germany. That includes @reservoirdistillery .

One of their special projects is a bourbon finished in a red wine cask. The bourbon is made from 100% corn and aged in a small 20l (5 gallon) barrel with alligator charring, so that even the relatively short maturation period of two years results in quite a bit of wood influence. After that the bourbon spends 18 months in an unspecified wine cask of French oak, though most claim red wine. Bottled at solid 50% ABV, it should be intense.

Nose: lots of Bourbon-like vanilla and buttered popcorn but immediately overpowered by ripe red grapes, black currant, charred oak, dark chocolate and mild pepper
Palate: intense, woody, far more spicy than expected with pepper and bitter oak, again ripe grapes but more chocolate, added tobacco; the sweetness of bourbon definitely takes a backseat although it is still present.
Finish: this is all oak, and I love it... spicy, bitter, long

This is a fascinating whiskey. Wonderfully balanced in the nose providing equal amounts of sweets and spices, it gets ever more spicy from there on. The wine cask, which is unmistakably made from French oak, clearly dominates palate and finish. While finished bourbons are no longer a rarity such a strong influence of the finish certainly qualifies as rare. Thus the Maison de Cuivre almost feels ... European.
