This Booker’s is allegedly how Jim Beam liked his whiskey. Mind you, this is not the founding immigrant Johannes Böhm; it is his great-grandson, James Beauregard Beam. Anyway, Jim liked his whiskey uncut, straight from the barrel and at an age of six to eight years – and that is what Booker’s is doing.

Created by Booker Noe, the grandson of Jim Beam, this bourbon was part of his small batch series introduced in 1988.
With it, a whole new class of super-premium bourbon was created, one attractive to high-end consumers. The small batch series did for bourbon what single malt did for Scotch whisky.

Even today, with such high-end bourbons being a regular sight in stores, the Booker’s holds up incredibly well. It may not be the towering over everybody else’s bourbon anymore, and its corn-heavy mash bill may look a bit dated, yet the flavours are there and impressive. People have made it a form of art to distinguish between the batches, and while that is correct, it is sometimes overdone.

We got batch 2023-02E, btw. The E stands for export, but other than the bottle holding 700ml and having a different label, it is the same as the Apprentice Batch 2023-02.

Nose: as expected loads of heavy caramel, less vanilla, cookie dough, baked apple, toasted hazelnuts, a little pepper
Palate: the high amount of alcohol is well integrated but it starts crispy and peppery, far more than one would have expected, lots of oak spice; in general the taste is oaky and there is even burned wood in the mix for a subtle smoke influence; of course it is still sweet with all its caramel and nuts
Finish: medium and sweet

Probably not the best batch but an interesting one. It is an oak driven whiskey on the palate but one would not guess so judging by its nose (and finish). I personally liked it. In fact, I would have asked for more wood, if anything.

@scapawhisky is back, and better than ever. With clear age statements, increased ABV and first-class selection of first fill casks, the new Scapa line-up is impressive. Much of what fans liked about the old Scapa is still present, but the flaws of the old one (namely the low ABV) were eliminated. The result is frankly amazing.

The core of the new range is perhaps the 16 year old, being a premium whisky above the entry level 10 year old expression, and the high-end 21 year old in cask strength. The 16yo has a wonderful balance and great harmony but it comes with enough power to emphasize its depth and complexity, too.

Nose: Crème brûlée, lots of tropical fruits like mango, papaya and grilled pineapple; salty caramel, a little oak spice, cardamom and black pepper.
Palate: again creamy sweetness and tropical fruits in perfect harmony, but more spice with red pepper, coriander, true laurel
Finish: medium length but there is an unexpected spiciness and a lot oak.

Today, 35 years ago, the Berlin Wall fell and marked the beginning of the end of dictatorship, and the coming of democracy. It is a good time to remember that democracy must not be taken for granted; many brave women and men committed their lives to free themselves from the evils of socialism.
_
To honour them, we raise a glass of German whisky – Bavarian whisky @heiligenbergfeld , to be precise – and drink it in the heart of East Berlin. This single cask single malt whisky by Heiligenbergfeld was matured in an oloroso sherry butt and bottled at cask strength. It is supposed to work with cigars, which we unfortunately cannot test as we are non-smokers. But it is for a sure a great winter whisky.

Nose: sugarcane, cinnamon, apricots and sweet raisins, leather
Palate: velvety texture and creamy mouthfeel, syrup sweetness and massive ripe red fruits on the one hand, ginger, curcuma and baldmoney on the other, some oak spice
Finish: long and a bit more on the spicy side

This is a cask driven whisky and what it does, it does very well. It is definitely a good choice for people who like intense flavours, and we can totally see us drinking it on Christmas eve. Recommended.
