Nordhausen @traditionsbrennerei is producing Whisky? This is guaranteed to turn heads since it is the largest in Germany, easily dwarfing the largest whisky distillery, and certainly the best-known. The tradition of distilling rye goes back to the Late Middle Ages and is first attested in 1507. In fact, it is that tradition which German emigrants brought with them to America where they founded distilleries that would become famous for their rye whisky, like Oberholtzer (Oberholt) or Bomberger. Cask maturation is also no stranger to the distillery.

With the growing popularity of rye whisky and hundreds of years of experience distilling rye it was only a matter of time when Nordhausen would enter the scene. And they did so a few weeks ago. It was a long planned and well prepared move. They did not rush anything and decided to mature the whisky for no less than 10 years.

10 years... for a German whisky, a German Rye Whisky no less, that is quite some time. Matured in toasted German oak and bottled at 46% ABV it is a surprisingly elegant and gentle whisky. It has all the notes you come to expect from good rye, especially spice and menthol freshness, plus sweetness from the casks. But it also comes with a great mouth feel and an almost floral lightness in the nose.

When Louis Forman chose a new name for the whiskey of the Bomberger distillery in 1975, he took the names of his sons Michael and Peter and created a name with a distinctly German sound, Michter’s, to honour the Pennsylvania Dutch tradition of the distillery.

Indeed many distilleries in the US were founded by immigrants coming from the territories of the Holy Roman Empire, mostly Germans but also Dutch, Swiss, and so on.
Names like Böhm (Beam), Oberholtzer (Overholt) or Dickel have made their marks in American whiskey history as much as any other distiller. Most of them continued to do what they did in the old world: distilling rye.

People in the Holy Roman Empire have been distilling rye since the Late Middle Ages, so they had a lot of experience. Nordhausen for example is still famous of its rye distillates and their history goes back to the 15th century. It is only fitting that the emigrants would put their expertise to good use when they settled in the New World.

Also, something very important has been almost forgotten when talking about American whiskey history. These days journalists like to focus on the dark past of some distilleries and their use of slaves, and it is important to remember. Likewise it is just as important to highlight the fact that the vast majority of Pennsylvania’s whiskey distillers were staunch abolitionists.
Abraham Oberholtzer of Old Overholt fame for example was almost 80 years old when the Civil War broke out, yet he came to the battlefields, encouraged the Union troops and supplied them with whiskey. Many members of his family voluntarily fought for the cause of abolitionism, as did hundreds of thousands of German immigrants.
Thus their Rye whiskey is the drink of the abolition, and it should be revered as such.

Texas music meets Texas whisky, and it is good. In 2021 ZZ Top @zztop and @balconesdistilling announced their cooperation and released a whisky named after the band’s first top 10 chart album: Tres Hombres. The name also reflects the unusual making of the whisky, as it is a blend of pure Rye whisky, Single Malt and Corn whisky. The three distillates were aged separately, and after four years they were blended to create the Tres Hombres and bottled at 50% ABV.

It is not disclosed what the percentages of the components are, my guess is that the rye takes a bit of a backseat – which must not be bad per se. The whisky has a wonderful balance of typical bourbon sweetness combined with a rather unusual (for American whisky) fruit sweetness and lots of ... malt, really. It is extremely smooth, with only subtle and gentle spices maybe reminiscent of rye. Add to it a certain earthiness which I found in basically all Balcones bottlings, especially the ryes, and you get a remarkably complex but also remarkably accessible whisky.

Balcones may well have managed to do the impossible: a celebrity whisky that can be enjoyed by casual drinkers as well as afficionados.
