Single Grain is not exactly mainstream but independent bottlers such as @wmcadenheads provide a nice window into that niche of Scotch whisky. While the days of dirt cheap grain whisky are over, it is still less expensive than its more fashionable Single Malt brothers.

Well aged and matured, released at cask strength, Single Grain can be a marvellous experience and it shows a different side of Scotch whisky. Cadenhead’s releases a 29yo Cameronbridge like this one almost every year, and they are always slight different. Ours was distilled in 1989, and bottled in 2018.

Cameronbridge is a well-known grain whisky distillery, and pretty much every whisky fan has tried their whisky – though usually in blended whiskies such as Johnnie Walker or Vat 69. Also, Gordon’s Gin is distilled there, so can guess the dimensions of that distillery.

Whisky made from wheat is still quite rare. While wheat is a common grain added to many Bourbon mash bills, only few whiskies choose it as their primary ingredient. In fact, it has largely been a domain of small and micro distilleries.

Wheat makes for a light, sweet and floral style of whisky, often very fruity. It can aptly be described as almost the opposite of rye whisky. With rye being rather popular at the moment, and the wheat style deemed unexiting by many, the zeitgeist seems tob e against it.
_
Yet, there are a few notable exceptions including the giant Heaven Hill: since 2005 they release the Bernheim Kentucky Straight Wheat Whiskey. Some bottlings have an age statement, some – like this one – do not. With probably just a tad over 51% wheat in the mash bill and a relatively mild 45% ABV it should be an easy sipper.

The Gilors Sherry Duett by the Hessian distillery @brennereihenrich is a fantastic whisky if you like sherry influence in your drams. Matured for 7 years in a PX cask and an Oloroso cask, you get the full load of red fruit, dried fruit, leathery aromas, and an overall very sweet whisky. It is quite complex, nicely balanced (even if clearly on the sweet side), and rather powerful.

Another find on the BCB. Actually, we knew about Millstone already but never had a chance until this year’s @barconventber . And good thing we did! This is a fine rye.
The Rye 100 is aptly named being distilled on a pot still from 100% rye, matured for at least 100 months in new American day, and bottled at 100 Proof. Detailed notes will follow but rest assured it is great.

The Rye 92 shares the same qualities but is bottled at a lower proof and thus comes at a lower price. It is a nice entry level rye whisky for those who would like to get a first impression.

We have tasted a lot of rye over the past five years from all corners of the globe: US, India, Canada, Finland, Scotland (of all places!), Germany and many more. The Millstone expressions easily rank among the better if not one of the best ones of them.
