Blanton’s was started in 1984 (coincidentally, Kai’s year of birth) and was pretty much the first widely commercially available single barrel bourbon. Elmar T. Lee, master distiller at Buffalo Trace, remembered his ancestor’s way of choosing the best barrels from the best warehouse and providing his business partners with premium bourbon. The name of that ancestor was Colonel Albert Blanton.

Funny enough, for quite some time, the Blanton’s Gold was exclusively available in the export market, including Germany. This is how we came in contact with it many years ago. It is a higher proof variant, and in our opinion it is actually the best of the bunch, even better than the barrel strength.

Originating in 1984 means it is a very traditional bourbon. The Mash Bill is called as ‘higher rye’, though the 12-15% rye would hardly qualify as such these days. After six to eight years in the best warehouse, it is a finely aged whiskey for sure, well balanced but also very powerful.

Nose: heavy caramel, dried fruits, dark chocolate, a quite fresh citrusy or orangey note on top.
Palate: again caramel, vanilla, smooth but with a hint of pepper and tobacco
Finish: long and very pleasing

The Blanton’s Gold is probably not a modern bourbon (anymore), but what it does it does extremely well.

Given the heat I was in the mood for some rum and then I saw a rum that was finished in a rye cask. It is at least eight years old and its finishing lasted for two to three months. Right now I am preparing a full review which should be ready soon. So here are my first impressions:

Nose: syrup, vanilla, baked banana, minimal wood spices
Taste: more of the same but with far more wood influence, the spices are more noticeable too with clove, star of aniseed and coriander, but still the syrupy impression dominates
Finish: quite long and clearly on the sweet side, too
_
Would I have tasted the rye cask if I was not aware of it? Probably not. But then I do not drink rum all that often, so whatever deviation from a standard maturation there is, I might not notice anyway. Still, it is a nice sipper, easy to drink, and a good dessert choice.

Although whisky and beer are closely related to one another, beer cask maturations are still rather rare. ...and often unsuccessful. We are glad to tell you this is a different story. Made in cooperation with @bergquell_loebau, a brewery well-known in Germany for its Porter, this whisky works out really well.
_
In fact, it is unlike any beer cask maturation we know. Stout finishes e.g. usually result in sweet roasted aromas, pale ale gives sparkling citrus freshness, but this one seems ton increase the malty qualities of the whisky. It provides greater depth and maturity than the young age would suggest.

Anyway, Penderyn has an impressive history, singlehandedly kick-starting the renaissance of Welsh whisky. I sure hope Penderyn survives the troubled times because some of their bottlings were downright spectacular.

This Icons of Wales example was not just visually appealing. First matured in Buffalo Trace casks then finished in a mix of sherry and red wine casks, it has a wonderful combination of oaky spice, sweet red fruit and the typical bourbon goodness of caramel and vanilla, all the while being pleasantly dry. This is perhaps an underrated whisky.

Obviously, the historian also likes the branding: here it features a figure of the Mabinogion, a compilation of oral traditions from the High Middles Ages detailing Welsh history.
