The best bourbon? As far as this year’s experiences are concerned, it very much is. The Remus Gatsby Reserve is a 15 year old bourbon in barrel strength, that is incredibly layered, deep and intense.

Given the rather low ABV of 48,9% it had surprisingly strong power to underscore its complexity. Also a pure joy is the look of the bottle. It oozes art deco and is a great reference to the Roaring Twenties.

Nose: massive, dark caramel, pickled sweet cherry, dried cocoa beans, worn leather, tobacco, furniture polish, clove, red pepper, cardamom, charred sawdust and campfire aromas

Palate: intense and powerful without any alcoholic burn, more caramel and cocoa, overripe cherry and plum, and candied red apple; more spices including a much stronger red pepper, plenty of wood, even tannins, smoldering wood fire, leather and tobacco

Finish: long lasting with a lot of dry wood

Especially people who usually think bourbon is too sweet for them, should give it a try. While the sweet elements are present, they are not as cloyingly sweet as usual, and the dry and spicy notes not only counterbalance them but also push the whisky in a very mature direction.

The Remus Gatsby Reserve @remusbourbon clearly shows its advanced age in the best possible way.

It is no secret that we enjoy brandy from time to time, and then there is no way around Hennessy. It is the quintessential cognac of modern times because it rebranded itself massively.

Brandy, and especially cognac, were mostly seen as a drink for old, rich men. But since WW2 there was another group of people enjoying cognac, African-Americans. In dark times of segregation, discrimination and racism, they discovered cognac when serving in Europe. It was seen as an alternative to the whisky preferred by the ruling Anglo-Saxons. Jazz and cognac for example became a common pairing, at least for those who could afford it.

It took the cognac industry a while to capitalize on this cultural phenomenon, but capitalize on it they did. In the late eighties cognac ads began targeting the black community, and it was a massive success, though the breakthrough came in the 2000s. Hennessy in particular scored the very important partnership with the NBA.

And while people like to tell the story of deep cultural roots – some even claiming it goes back several hundred years – the reality is a little more... sober.

Cognac brands merely tried to get a new customer base in a time of crisis as their Asian market was in trouble.

Also, cognac was not just chosen by rappers for its deep spiritual meaning or anything, it is expensive. That is it. Cognac has always been more expensive than whisky, cognac has always been the elitist drink vs the proletarian whisky.
Busta Rhymes with “Pass the Courvoisier” or Snoop Dogg with “Hennessy and Buddha” were deliberately showing a luxurious, lavish lifestyle.

And it is precisely this reason, and none other, that European and German rappers also began showcasing cognac. Many of them are not even allowed to drink it in the first place... but that is another story.

So, there is a lot to unpack about the history of cognac, and this is only scratching the surface.

Returning to our series, one Bourbon has to be there: Bookers. Known as one of the first premium bourbons, it is a true trailblazer. It perfectly demonstrates what Jim Beam can do when they carefully select barrels and bottle the whiskey undiluted.

Released in batches, afficionados collect said batches but we are here for the drinking experience. Our Batch 2022-02, called the Lumberyard, is 7 years old and comes at 62,4% ABV.

Nose: at first a massive load of vanilla, followed by cookie dough, chocolate chips, and then some old leather and mild spices like clove. Very straight-forward.

Palate: oily, thick, again with vanilla and cookie dough, but not as much as before, ripe sweet plum, raisins, definitely a little spice kick including black pepper and cinnamon bark, leather.

Finish: given the ABV, it is intense, but also rather dry which is quite welcome.

This is basically the bourbon of bourbons. If somebody asks what is good bourbon, this would be the answer. Fans will love it. On the other hand, if one does not like bourbon on principle, the Bookers will do nothing to change that.
Still, given its provenance and legacy the Bookers is a must-try for every whisky fan, every single one of them.

Well, we rarely drink peated whisky but, in fact, we do. For us it is a nice reminder how big the wide whisky world actually is. It is important never to lose perspective and enjoy whisky in all its variety.

This Morrison malt is an independently bottled Islay whisky, and given there are two distilleries on Islay we quite like, this bottle was actually emptied by us.

Nose: cold embers on the beach, earthy and gentle peat, and zesty citrus fruit, with a good amount of sweet pears

Palate: caramel, vanilla, some oak spices; the cask did some work; more and less gentle smoke, this time almost like burning wood

Finish: surprisingly long, woody and spicy; perhaps the highlight from our point of view.

The bottle is gone now. Maybe not what we would consider a daily dram, it is still a very enjoyable whisky that indeed incapsulates some of the island’s characteristics. So, goal achieved.
