@maltsofgermany is a project started by five cooperating distilleries to highlight the quality of current German whiskies, their uniqueness and range. As such the Malts of Germany aim for the connoisseurs rather than the casual fans.
Since we already had good experiences with @nine_springs , one of the founding members, we decided to have a look at its offering in Batch 2. Matured in American and German Spessart oak for six years, and bottled at 54% ABV, this was right up our alley anyway.

Nose: strong cherry, almost maraschino-cherry, mixed with cinnamon and pepper; dark chocolate, pipe tobacco, leather

Palate: cherry jam, apricot jam, vanilla, mild herbs, a bit of white pepper and habanero chili

Finish: medium and rather dry

My theory: It seems more and more German distilleries come to grips with using German oak these days. In the beginning, especially the full maturations were often overpowering the distillate entirely. But, as this whisky demonstrates, used as part of a maturation process, it works out splendidly. It provides a great amount of spiciness without imparting too much oakyness.
The very intense cherry note in the nose is a bit unusual at first but it certainly makes the whisky recognizable, and in conjunction with the other aromaas it tastes great.

Lastly, the five founding members, @stonewood_whisky @singolddestillerie @birkenhof.brennerei @sauerlaender_edelbrennerei @nine_springs , are an interesting mix of distilleries. And I would be remiss not to note the fact that all of them have experience in producing whisky other than single malt. If you want to show the diversity of German whisky, there should be whisky of rye, wheat etc. on the list.

@glinawhisky is one of the few distilleries in Germany that committed early to rye whisky. As such they can easily provide a 10yo rye whisky as part of their core range without an outrageous price tag. Matured in a sherry cask, the whisky offers a delicious combination of sweetness and spiciness. I have to admit though, the time spend in oak reduced the minty freshness of the distillate a bit.

Nose: stone fruit, cacao, leather, tobacco, pepper, nutmeg, cinnamon bark
Palate: more cacao, coffee cream, toffee, pepper, clove, curcuma, ripe plum
Finish: oaky and spicy

One can see cask and distillate combining well, and it proves why this combination is a modern classic of rye whisky making. In fact, even the more traditionalist American rye makers have taken notice and introduce more and more sherry matured ryes themselves.

So, vote, and prepare to drink a big glass of whisky tonight. It looks like we are going to need it.

The Voyage is at an End, at last @jeffersonsbourbon

Once the Jefferson’s Ocean was an elusive whiskey, and extremely so here in Germany, commanding insane prices. As such I never pulled the trigger on it. However, recently it was made some of them more readily available to us. So I finally satisfied my curiosity.

At its core, it is a blend of sourced bourbons, aged between six and eight years, before sent on a sea voyage for some months. The general idea is that the movement aboard the ship increases the influence of the barrel. In case of voyage 24, the journey led through ports in the Caribbean and Central America, which means the temperatures were quite a bit higher than usual.

The result is a frankly surprising whiskey, at least to me. I expected a lot of oak spice, but the barrel seems to have been exclusively focussed on imparting its sweet qualities to the whiskey. It is a massive load of chewy, soft caramel, brown sugar, and a bit of vanilla. Really, the caramel stands out. And there is not much else. Even by bourbon standards, this is super-sweet and more than a little one-dimensional. If one tries really hard one may get some candied nuts and baked red apples. Maybe.

If you are out to experience some saltiness that previous batches are supposed to have, Voyage 24 disappoints. It is a solid bourbon and it makes for a perfect dessert, or even a relaxed evening when you do not need a complicated whiskey. I would recommend it to die-hard bourbon fans only, though. As a rye fan myself... I struggle a bit with it, even if I understand its charme.
